april 17 we are in italy. the alps were amazing, the markers to guide us where every where.
the aches and pains are just about gone. the weather changed from cold to spring all in one day
when we were in the alps.and in italy it is warm, the last 3 days in the 25 to 30C it is very
hard to pass from cold to hot without spring in between, but we are not complaining. we could not
go through the st bernard pass too much snow and they probably not open till end of
may when we will probably have reached rome.
some days are very hard, yesterday we were supposed to do 30 kilometers but we ended doing
35 but the time that it took us was 11 hours, all day we went up and then down, then up and down
it was very hard. today was much easier 22 kilo and we got to our destination at 1:30 probably the eariest
since we have started. some of the downhills are very dangerous because the path is very narrow and then
there is emptiness, so very scary. In Martigny in Switzerland, the path was so dangerous that we took
another one, because we were told that there were trees on the path and you could not go around them
and in some places the path was washed away and you had to go up in the unknown we decided
that we wanted to get to Rome all in one piece so we did not go.  Our guide book is not the greatest
because we have to have it in our hands every 1 or 2 kilometers or 100 meters, so very tiring to
carry the book all day. so far we have managed not to get loss because all the roads lead to rome
and we kind of follow our instinct and find our way again.

  2. Ah Italy,

I hope you take time to savour those great Italian meals and the vino (just a little) as you are doing some serious hiking. The trails seem very challenging. Sounds like a chainsaw would come in handy.
